Serve Others: Habitat Build in Zambia

Three years ago, Amanda Nieman went with Habitat for Humanity to build houses in Zambia. And this month she returned to Zambia to assist the local Habitat chapter. She worked in the Chipulukusu village, historically a “safe haven for criminals” fleeing the city of Ndola. The arrival of Habitat Zambia and the resulting development brought about a name change for the village from Chipulukusu to Mapalo, which is translated as “blessing.”

Beyond the blessing of a home, Habitat seeks to work with local partners to assist residents in maintaining their home. Some of these services include education around living wills. A micro-finance coop of chickens and a corn-based mill are a few economic opportunities which will provide income to decrease defaulting on mortgage payments.
